Malin Kundang
Malin Kundang was the son of a poor fisherman who lived in a fishing village in the mouth of Batang Aru river in west Sumatra. His parents loved him very much. He wanted to be a sailor since he was a child.
When Malin Kundang was grown up, he worked on a cargo ship. Because he was diligent, careful, smart, and strong, the captain of the ship asked him to be the second command to the captain. He asked Malin Kundang to be his son-in-law. Malin Kundang married the captain’s daughter. Only in a short time he became very wealthy. He owned a ship and became a very successful captain.
One day, his mother came to see him. She was very delightful to see her son. But Malin Kundang pretended not to recognize his own mother. Malin Kundang’s mother was very deep sad. At least she cursed Malin Kundang to be a stone, and she went home sadly.
