Fair Art Exhibition
In school, Anita had an instructor who taught design. He never seemed to be happy with her work, but she had an intense enthusiasm for painting that no one could dampen and she would paint on into the summer when school was out.
Once when she visited aunt Bella. She did some painting on her farm. She got the pictures framed and entered them in the Surabaya fair art exhibition. Once they were entered, however, she began to worry. At that time, no artists could afford to pass up a chance for a cash prize no matter how small, and all the best artists in the state would have their paintings in the show. When the fair opened in September, she was well prepared for a bitter disappointment. Nevertheless, she hurried across the fairground to the art pavilion anxious to see the result, whatever they might be.
The instant she entered the main gallery, she spotted one of her paintings above the heads of the crowd, and on looking again she noticed a red ribbon attached to the frame.
It was an overwhelming moment, and to this day it remains one of the biggest thrills in her memory.
